Description (taken from UA calendar): Set in a Russian backwater and littered with a population of corrupt administrators and greedy merchants, Gogol’s satirical comedy paints a picture of rampant lunacy. All seems lost for this disheveled little town when they discover that the Government Inspector is paying a surprise visit-incognito. Who is he? What does he look like? Is he already here? Will he marry the mayor’s daughter? Gogol’s hilarious comedy will leave you laughing in the face of authority- and perhaps at your own face as well.

This is an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to meet Dr. Diouf and find out more about her research. She will also be discussing and signing copies of her latest book, Dreams of Africa in Alabama on Tuesday, November 13 at 4 pm, also in Gorgas Library room 205.

Description (taken from UA calendar): Sylviane Diouf, noted historian and author, will talk about her latest book Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America (Oxford University Press, 2007) Sylviane Diouf holds a PhD from the University of Paris and is a curator at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City. Diouf was just awarded the 2007 Wesley-Logan Prize in African Diaspora History of the American Historical Association.

Description (taken from UA calendar): We listened to young adults talk about how hard it can be sometimes to fit in at colleges and universities. The labeling and grouping on most campuses tends to put you in one group and keep you out of others. Sometimes, the way other people treat you is tied to how "your group" rates at school. We understand hanging out with people we think are most like us can be comfortable. But we also understand it can be uncomfortable when you want to hang out with someone new and other people think you should "stick with your own kind." Nowhere on school campuses are the boundaries of group membership more clearly drawn than in and around the cafeteria. "They" sit at those tables and "the ..." hang out over there. Everybody knows where you're supposed to hang out. But why does it have to stay that way? Truth is, things don't have to be how they've always been. That's why we decided to support young people who wanted to create change and started Mix It Up.
Mix It Up believes in the power of young adults to create and sustain real change. We want to provide ideas and tools to help you break the walls of division in your school and community.Mix It Up is a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance program.

UA Leadership Series

Students will have the opportunity to learn how to be effective leaders by participating in a variety of activities, including completing the Myers-Briggs personality profile. The seminar will meet on the second Tuesday of every month. Series topics include: Leadership Styles, Decision-making, Resolving Conflict, and Networking.

Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre

Headed by Artistic Director and 2001 Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year, Cornelius Carter, the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre is the ultimate dance experience.
